Serving Our Members
Our main purpose is to help each board member increase his/her
governance skills. To achieve this, the USBA provides diverse
development opportunities designed for individual or full-board
training. The USBA will customize training for the local boards
upon request.
Whether for new or veteran board members, continued professional
development will keep the focus of the board on the welfare
of the children.
Annual State Convention
The Convention is a great opportunity to participate in workshops
and presentations specifically designed to keep board members
up-to-date in the latest research, policy, technology, and
advocacy issues. Simply put, it provides board members the
opportunity to rub shoulders with colleagues and benefit from
their experiential knowledge base.
Leadership Academy
The USBA officers and the Board of Directors have conducted
an excellent Leadership Academy for over a decade. Each year
that the Academy is held, it undergoes a careful evaluation
to continue those items that the most recent participants
ranked the highest. Additional input for new programs is also
gathered and developed for the next Academy. We feel the Academy
has something to offer every board member, not just new ones.
Regional Meetings
During the Spring and Fall, USBA Officers and the Board of
Directors annually sponsor regional meetings providing timely
and educational curriculum to all board members, superintendents,
and business administrators in the state of Utah. Though the
local boards have been separated into regions, local school
boards and/or individuals may attend the meeting that is most
convenient.
March regional meetings focus upon the activities that took
place in the legislative session prior. September meetings
are usually the opportunity to provide new programs and resources
to the local districts on topics ranging from pending legislation
to public relations. And, of course, dinner is always provided.
Board Presidents Workshop
The overall effectiveness of the board president determines
to a great extent, the public's and staff's perception and
support of the local board of education. Board Presidents
Workshop is held during the February of odd-numbered years.
Board presidents, vice-presidents, and superintendents are
invited to participate in this training. Board officers will
gain additional skills to help them facilitate and lead the
activities of their respective school boards.
New Board Member Workshop
Held during the December of even years, this workshop is designed
provide newly-elected board members a jump-start on the role,
responsibilities, leadership, and authority of school boards.
Through the use of panel discussions, examinations of various
scenarios, breakout sessions--all of which are taught by highly
qualified board members and superintendents--participants
will become acquainted with their new role.
Delegate Assembly
The Delegate Assembly is the policy-making body of the Association.
Each local board selects one board member to be its delegate
at the Assembly. Also, each region elects two at-large delegate.
The Assembly is convened at other times to handle significant
business and provide direction for the Board Directors
